Why would someone want to spread rumors about themselves on social media?

To what extent would you go to for attention from your peers?  In reading the cyber-bullying article, I was surprised to learn that there are individuals that would say negative things or spread rumors about themselves to get attention.  It appears negative attention, is better than no attention at all for some people.

According to Yancey-Braggs, it has been reported that 6% of students between 12-17 years of age have committed cyber-bullying against themselves.  They have posted negative rumors using sites such as Tumblr and Formspring, according to Yancey-Braggs.  Officials state that a teenager committed suicide after sending herself a question anonymously through a website called Ask.fm.  Ask.fm allows you to send someone a question anonymously.  It was found that the messages were coming from the same IP address as her social media account.  Therefore, she was sending the messages or questions to herself anonymously.  There must have been something she wanted exposed about herself and this was the only way she felt it could be done.

This and other similar situations have made officials aware that not all cyber-bullying is done by someone other than the victim.  Some victims make themselves victims.  As a parent, I know her parents had to question themselves about how they missed the warning signs about depressions or whatever ailed the teenager.

The sites need to be held accountable.  They are creating situations where students can bully other students via their website anonymously.

It's interesting that the image above depicts someone that is starving for attention.  He feels in control when he takes someone else's control away from them.  In this article, the bully is the person playing the victim.  It's ludicrous to terrorize yourself.  So, if I were making an accurate depiction, I would have the bully looking in a mirror at him or herself.
